Autism Spectrum Disorder
We are all familiar with the “Race to the Top.” plight facing schools and educators across the country. We realize that the integration of technology is inevitable. We all know that school funding is an issue. However, many do not realize that there is yet another growing issue that all schools will have to address. This issue is called “Autism.” “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released a new study stating that autism now affects 1 in every 110 American children and 1 in 70 boys (Autism Prevalence Rises 1 in 110 Children, 2010).” The number of students diagnosed with being on the autistic spectrum is constantly growing. Many of these students are in mainstream, inclusion, and contained classrooms within the public schools. Furthermore, although mainstream teacher may feel that this issue is solely a special education issue, read the preceding sentence again. Many of these students are in mainstream classes and/or in inclusion classes, which means that a regular education teacher will have to teach the student on the spectrum.
